View Article  Will ClaroRead Install On Our Network?

Schools and larger organizations wishing to use ClaroRead will be pleased to know that ClaroRead can be installed from a central network location onto every machine in that network - as long as you have purchased a site or multi-user license.

Using Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI files) for its software installers, ClaroRead can be installed using standard Microsoft installation techniques (for more information, visit the Microsoft Developer Network site here).

Users will notice on a site or multi-user license the following contents on their software, allowing for network installation:

setup.exe

This displays the first user interface and calls all the program and voice installers in turn. It is the program run when an end user uses the CD. It uses information from setup.ini and program.txt (e.g. "InstallClaroRead5.txt") to control the installation, including commandline arguments passed to msiexec.exe during installation. Finally, it triggers the User Access Control in Vista so that subsequent MSIs are installed with the correct administrative permissions.

program.txt, e.g. "InstallClaroRead5.txt"

(These used to be .bat batch files.) Each line of this file is passed to msiexec.exe by setup.exe, so it determines what is installed from the CD. You can therefore determine the settings for a single-user installation from it.

VISTA_EOAC_DESCRIPTION is the text that appears in Vista's Ease of Access Center as a description of the program.

Program folder, e.g. "ClaroReadPLUS"

The program folder contains the main files for installing the Claro program including:

The program installer MSI file, e.g. "CR_3.1_00.msi" - This program is passed to msiexec.exe with the /I switch in CD installation by setup.exe.

An internationalization transform MST file, e.g. "Swedish.mst" - This is used to translate the installation process only, not the final installed program. If your end users are not going to run the installation program then it is not required, but you must remove it from the msiexec.exe commandline arguments defined in program.ini or else make sure it is present.

Configuration and installation files, e.g. "default.loc", "WordRead PLUS.exe" - The other files in the Program folder are external to the MSI installer file but are necessary for it to install correctly. If you copy the MSI somewhere else to install from there (e.g. a network drive) then be sure to move these files as well.

Voices folder

The Voices folder contains all the RealSpeak and Acapela voice installer MSI files, called something like "RS05_00.msi" or "AC01_00.msi". These are self-contained MSIs so can be used directly. They require administrative privileges to install.

For additional information on network installation and multi-user pricing, please email us at usasales@clarosoftware.com.

View Article  Using ClaroRead with ESL Learners

For individuals looking to use ClaroRead as a tool to assist in learning the English language, there are many features ESL learners can benefit from.

     Spelling

The Spelling button on the ClaroRead toolbar is an advanced spell checker for use when writing. Instead of simply highlighting a misspelled word, as many spell checkers do, ClaroRead Spelling combines a homophone, dictionary, thesaurus, reference dictionary, and spellchecker in one. Once a misspelled word is selected and the Spelling button is selected, users can view the words definition, alternative words that may be used, examples of the word used in a sentence, and have the word read aloud for verbal confirmation it is correct.

    NEW Word Checking

ClaroRead version 5 provides a new Word Checking feature that allows users to double check the word they are using in a particular context by offering definitions and correct spellings of a word. In addition, a Google search link is also provided for looking up words online. For ESL learners unsure of the proper word to use, Word Checking offers comprehensive support in selecting and learning vocabulary.

     Homophones

Understanding the difference between two words that sound alike but are spelled differently can be as challenging for ESL learners as it is for those fluent in English. ClaroRead's toolbar provides a Homophone support button to assist users in identifying, choosing and editing homophones within a document to ensure correct word choice.

     Word Prediction

The Word Prediction feature of ClaroRead is not only a great way to complete typing faster, but it also assists with making sure the user selects the correct word as he or she types. As the user writes, potential words the user is meaning to type appear in a pop up box by the sentence. The user can select the appropriate word choice from the ClaroRead listing to ensure correct its the right word, spelling, and context.

For additional information on how ClaroRead can help ESL learners, visit us online at http://www.claroread.com/.

View Article  Why use Word Prediction?

ClaroRead's Word Prediction feature is helpful for users who struggle with word selection or spelling. As a user types, a box appears with possible words the user is meaning to type. The dictionary learns as one types, and rejects words that don't pass the automatic spellcheck.

Instead of spending time typing an entire word - and risk a mispelling, or trying to decide which word is best to use in a particular context, users simple select the correct word from the choices given in the Word Prediction box.

In addition, The ClaroRead Advanced Settings Editor allows the creation of multiple Prediction Dictionaries, by importing words from existing documents. This tool is ideal for creating subject and curriculum specific dictionaries and catering to the needs of the specific user.

For additional information about ClaroRead's Word Prediction Feature, visit us online at ClaroRead.com.

View Article  The Benefits of ClaroRead's Homophone Support Tool

Homophones are best described as words that sounds the same but are spelled differently, such as "there" and "their" or "witch" and "which."  For someone who struggles with reading and writing, distinguishing which word is most appropriate to use in a specific context, as well as spelling it correctly, can be challenging.

Using the homophone support button on the ClaroRead toolbar allows users to:

-Identify every homophone listed in a document. ClaroRead provides a feature that actually highlights homophones in blue, so they can be easily identified after a document is written or as the writer writes them.

-Add additional words the user finds particularly tricky for ClaroRead to identify and correct within the Advanced Settings Editor.

-Select a homophone and view alternative words that sound the same, along with the meaning of each word.

-View a picture of the homophone (over 1000 images are provided with ClaroRead) if text definitions are not thorough enough to help the user identify the correct word.

-Have everything in the homophone feature read back to the user with ClaroRead's sophisticated text to speech capability.

View Article  Student Case Study: What Can ClaroRead Do For You?

Senior high school student Makenzie Kozojet, 17, of New Orleans, has been using ClaroRead for two years.

A dyslexic and auditory learner, Makenzie plans to go to college next year where she hopes to continue using ClaroRead.

Makenzie says “I read slowly. I can mix letters up and I struggle with some words. But ClaroRead reads text out and helps with your comprehension, without the need to have someone read out loud for you.

“I did use another product before, which had the same basic process of reading words out – but it was more complicated to use, and it couldn’t scan in text and books.

“Reading 30 pages a night would basically take me about two hours. But with ClaroRead, I can do it in 30 minutes to an hour. So it more than halves my reading time.

“When I am doing research, or making notes, it is a lot more useful to have text read out to me. ClaroRead can also read my own stuff back to me. Hearing my mistakes helps me fix them much more easily.

“My grades are all As and Bs. I am not sure what I want to do – perhaps I will study something do with either science or art.

“I have a 3.5 grade point average. Based on my academic grades, the colleges I’ve applied to are offering me scholarship support, that is, financial help to go to college. I’m just not sure which one I want to go to yet!

“ClaroRead has made me a lot more focussed and helped me save time. It has definitely made a difference in my comprehension and reading and writing.”

Makenzie’s mum Christine says “It is incredible the difference ClaroRead has made in Makenzie’s schoolwork. I used to have to read to her all the time – but as you get older you don’t want your mom reading to you!

“It has been a real confidence boost for Makenzie, and as result she is getting great grades at school. She used to struggle with a lot of her reading. It was really laborious, but ClaroRead just takes that away from her. And by having words read out, her comprehension has really improved.

“She and her friend were studying the same material together for a test recently and they were using ClaroRead. Makenzie ended up doing better on the test than her friend. She never gets a C – her grades are great.

“Imagine you are sitting in a classroom and the teacher asks you to read out loud and you can’t read as fast as the other kids. It’s terrifying, the other kids think you are stupid. It could really affect your self-esteem.

“Now that Makenzie uses ClaroRead, her grades are as good or better than her classmates, and she doesn’t have these issues any more. Since we bought the program, she has used it everyday – and that is a real testimony to the quality of the product. ClaroRead really has been a lifesaver.”
